- Make sure your computer meets minimum requirements
Make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements to work with Verizon Fios Internet Service. - Check for a grounded electrical outlet
Find the area where your utilities enter your home or garage. Nearby this area, you will need an indoor grounded electrical outlet that accepts three-pronged power cords. This outlet must not be controlled by a switch. - Allow 4 - 6 hours for installation
A typical installation takes 4 - 6 hours after the Verizon Technician arrives at your home. Make sure you allow enough time for installation. - Someone 18 years or older must be present
An adult who can make decisions regarding equipment placement and computer configuration options must be present for the entire installation. - Clear a path for the Verizon Technician to work
The Verizon Technician will need access to the location where your utilities enter your home or garage. The technician will also need room to work around your computer as well as any areas where Ethernet jacks will be installed. If you ordered Fios TV, the technician will need room to work around your TV(s). - Make sure you have Administrator Rights, plus any user names and passwords
In order for the Verizon Technician to be able to install Fios, you must have Administrator Rights on your Windows computer. If you have installed software on your computer before, you probably already have Administrator Rights. You also need to have any other user names or passwords needed to access your computer (for example: firewall, networking router, Windows logon). - Have your current Verizon Online user name and password (if applicable)
If you are a Basic Internet customer who is upgrading to Fios, please have your current Verizon Online user name and password available.
- Make sure your computer meets minimum requirements
What Happens During Fios Installation?
- Verizon Fios Internet Service installation is a two-step process. To ensure a fast and trouble-free installation, please review the Get Ready checklist prior to your installation day.
Someone over the age of 18 must be present during installation. The installation time can vary depending upon equipment that may already be present. If an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is present, average installation times are 2.5 to 4 hours. If there is no ONT, installation can take between 4 to 6 hours. Note: the Verizon Technician may not arrive within the first hour of the appointment due to pre-work.
Drilling may be required, and our skilled technician will work with you on the proper placement. Landlord permission is also required if you do not own the property.1 - Bringing fiber to your home
After you place your Fios order, we will install a fiber optic line to your home. Generally, installation involves either aerial or underground work, and depends on how previous utilities were delivered to your home. You typically do not need to be present for this part of installation.- Aerial installation
With an aerial installation, Verizon will install the fiber optic line from a telephone pole to the side of your home. Later, an ONT will be installed inside the home.
Note: Sometimes aerial installations are performed the same day of your scheduled installation appointment.
- Underground installation
With an underground installation, Verizon will contact the utility companies in your area to locate their services. Next a Verizon crew will dig a trench and bury the fiber from the Fiber Terminal in your neighborhood to the entry location at your home. This work is typically done 24-48 hours prior to your installation appointment.
Note: Please mark your sprinkler system or any other obstacles that may be buried in your yard. This helps ensure that no damage occurs during installation.

During your installation appointment, a Verizon Technician will install Verizon Fios Internet Service equipment in your home and establish a connection with the Fiber Terminal in your neighborhood. Next the technician will connect your computer to the Fios equipment in your home as well as guide you through the Fios software installation, account setup, and activation on your primary computer.Installation of Fios equipment- Optical Network Terminal (ONT)
The ONT converts the laser-generated signal that travels through Verizon fiber optic cables into an electronic signal that works with standard telephone and Internet equipment. The ONT is usually installed inside of your house or inside your apartment, generally in the area where any existing phone services enter your home. - Power Supply Unit
The Power Supply provides electricity to the ONT. Please ensure that you have a three-pronged electrical outlet that is not controlled by a switch available near where the ONT will be installed. The ONT requires very little power to operate. In fact, the amount of power needed is about what it would take to power a couple of night lights. - Battery Backup Unit
The Verizon ONT includes a Battery Backup Unit (BBU) feature. You may utilize this feature by maintaining an active batatery in the BBU. With an active battery, the BBU will provide backup power for your basic FiOS voice services, including Emergency 911 dialing, for up to 8 hours in the event of a commercial power failure. You are responsible for purchasing and/re replacing the battery in the BBU. Much like you would need to replace the batteries in a portable radio from time ot time, periodically the BBU battery must be replaced. Please note that a damaged or leading battery may damage Verizon network equipment and should be removed and/or relaced immediately.
Note: If you live in an apartment complex or condominium, Fios equipment may be installed in a central equipment room that you may not be able to access.Connecting your computer
The Verizon Technician will run data wiring from the ONT to your router and, if necessary, install an Ethernet jack. Then the technician will connect your computer to your router.
Note: If you need new wiring installed inside of your walls, consider hiring a contractor prior to your Fios installation.
Software installation and account setup
Your Verizon Technician will guide you through the Fios software installation and activate Fios on your primary computer. Additional computers can be configured by the technician for an extra fee. Once all work is completed, the technician will verify that your Fios service is working and that you can access the Internet. - Optical Network Terminal (ONT)

How does Fiber Optic Technology work?
- When you access the Internet, a fiber optic cable carries the laser-generated pulses of light to transmit the data signal to your home. Once the signal has arrived, an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) converts it to an electrical signal that is understood by your computer.
Your ONT takes all converted incoming information and delivers it to your router via an Ethernet cable. After the signal has passed through your firewall, the Ethernet cable carries the signal to the Network Interface Card plugged into your computerWhen you send an email or other data over the Internet, the electrical signal from your computer is converted back to light signals by the ONT and transmitted to the recipient over the fiber optic cable. This allows for the remarkably fast transfer of information. Optimizing your computer to improve performance

Wi-Fi connection tips
Your Wi-Fi coverage (the signal strength of your wireless router) can be affected by several factors, including its location. Learn more below.
Plan your home network
- Before installing your wireless home network, you should consider placing your router at a location to ensure you aren’t limiting the range by its distance to any barriers or interferences that may impact the wireless signal.
- Place your router:
- At least 10 feet from other Wi-Fi network or transmitting devices such as Bluetooth adapters, cordless phones, microwave ovens, baby monitors, or even the thin metal layer found in most mirrors to avoid potential interference
- Away from any large metal objects, heat sources, moisture, excessive dust, or extreme cold
- As close to the center of your home network area as possible, especially if you have a large area to cover or thick/dense walls
- Position the devices connected to your network so the signals will go straight through a wall rather than at an angle. If the signals hit a wall at an angle, the signals appear much larger and decreases its strength.
- Keep the number of walls and ceilings between your router and the other devices on your network to a minimum.
- Place the router near a window if you want to access the network outside.

Wi-Fi connection speeds
- Your Verizon router connects your wireless devices to the Internet using different kind of radio signals called Wi-Fi Standards. Some devices are compatible with one Wi-Fi standard, others many. You may have seen a list like Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac on the spec sheet for your device (laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.) or your router.Wi-Fi standards and what each is capable of:
Wi-Fi Standard Supporting Frequency Top Speed
(in a Lab)802.11b * 2.4 GHz 11 Mbps 802.11g 2.4 GHz 54 Mbps 802.11n 2.4 GHz 72 Mbps 802.11n 5 GHz 150 Mbps 802.11ac 5 GHz 800 Mbps Note: Just one 802.11b device on your 2.4 GHz network will slow all other connections down to the same 11 Mbps max. This will not affect the 5 GHz network. The My Fios app, My Account page on Verizon.com, and your Fios Quantum Gateway administration pages will all alert you if an 802.11b device is connected.Make sure all of your devices are compatible with the highest Wi-Fi standard your router supports. To use the fastest Wi-Fi standard:- Remove older devices from your home Wi-Fi
- Upgrade older router to use the latest Wi-Fi technology
Select the right channel with dual-band
- If you have a dual-band router like the Fios Quantum Gateway, try enabling both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. Keep the 5GHz channel open for your most important connections.
- The 5 GHz channel generally provides the highest possible throughput, but will have lesser range than the 2.4 GHz channel.
- Other devices, like microwaves or baby monitors, typically use the 2.4 GHz signal. If you experience interference, switch to the 5 GHz channel and get closer to the router (or place the router to where you use Wi-Fi connections most often).
Note: Newer model routers are capable of automatically selecting the least crowded frequencies upon rebooting. Perform a power cycle on your router or, log into the router and manually select a different channel. Extend Wi-Fi coverage range
- The Fios Network Extender is a wireless network adapter that expands the reach and potential of your Fios home or office wireless network. Consider adding a network extender to your home network. It will maximize the power of your wireless connection by boosting signal strength, eliminating dead spots and reducing glitches and lags in HD video and gaming experiences.Check your current speed with a Verizon Speed Test.Get a Fios Network Extender.
Use the highest Wi-Fi security
- Get in the habit of using the highest level of wireless security that your router will support. The WEP setting provides less security for your Wi-Fi connection and can reduce your speed by up to 80%. To provide the best and most secure setting for your Wi-Fi connections, opt instead for the WPA2 Protocol. If your router or the Wi-Fi device is not compatible with WPA2 encryption, WPA is the preferred encryption because it is still stronger than WEP. Ptcl evo zte drivers for mac free.
Avoid Interference
- Router Placement
Try placing your wireless router away from other Wi-Fi network or transmitting devices such as Bluetooth, refrigerators, cordless phones, microwave ovens and baby monitors. This can cause a significant decrease in speed, or the total blocking of the Wi-Fi signal when these devices are used near the router or other Wi-Fi connected devices.Reboot router
Rebooting (turning off and then back on) your router solves most Wi-Fi issues. Upon rebooting newer model routers generally select the least crowded frequencies.Dual-Band
If you have a dual-band router like the Fios Quantum Gateway, try enabling both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. If you experience interference, switch to the 5 GHz channel and get closer to the router (or place the router to where you use Wi-Fi connections most often). The 5 GHz channel generally provides the highest possible throughput, but will have shorter range than the 2.4 GHz channel.Note: When testing speed wirelessly, it is best to test away from other devices or turn off other devices. Stop video and audio streaming
- Streaming media could cause a reduction of your internet speed. To reduce traffic on your home network or Wi-Fi specifically:
- Stop multiple devices streaming at the same time
- Connect devices, such as gaming consoles, directly to the router using an Ethernet cable to free up some of the wireless capacity
Test your Wi-Fi connection again. Disconnect from Virtual Private Network (VPN)
- VPN lets you access your company's intranet remotely from your home network. Surfing over a VPN can result in slower speeds. Disconnect from VPN and test your Wi-Fi connection again. If you unable to turn off VPN, we recommend that you contact your company's IT department who can provide more assistance.
